Your ship anchors in the bay — one of the deepest natural harbours in the Mediterranean. A tender brings you to quai de l'Amiral Courbet, in the old village itself. We are there with a name board before your tender docks. Nice is six kilometres west, ten minutes by road. The Moyenne Corniche climbs directly from above the village. Eze and Monaco are east. The compact geography of Villefranche works entirely in your favour: less time in transit, more time at each stop.
The route.
Four stops, one day.
We drive west along the Corniche Inférieure — Nice is six kilometres, ten minutes at most. The road hugs the coast below the villas of Cap de Nice; the old port appears ahead as you round the last bend. Cours Saleya and the Vieux-Port, the flower and food market that runs every morning until noon. The old town behind it — narrow lanes, baroque churches, Italianate ochre facades, the light that made the Impressionists stay and return every winter. For a first visit, an hour here is the minimum. If you have been before, forty-five minutes in the market and we leave before the coaches arrive from the cruise port.
From Nice we take the Moyenne Corniche — the middle of the three coastal roads, the one Hitchcock used in To Catch a Thief. The road climbs sharply out of Nice and within minutes the coast is below you. First stop: the belvedere above Mont Boron. The Belle Époque villas cling to the hillside here, half-hidden in pine and cypress — the old money of Nice, largely unknown to visitors. The view is back over the old port and the Lympia basin, with the curve of the Baie des Anges to the west. The second stop is the one people remember: the panorama above Villefranche-sur-Mer. You are now looking down at the harbour where your ship is still anchored — that geometry, ship and village and medieval citadel from 400 metres above, fixes the geography of the morning in a way no map does. Cap Ferrat extends into the sea to the south. On clear mornings, Cap Martin and the Italian coast are visible beyond it. These two stops add fifteen to twenty minutes. They are not optional.
The view from 400 metres — Villefranche bay, your ship below
Eze is a medieval village built on a volcanic rock at 427 metres above the sea. Pedestrian from the gate — we leave you there and wait at the car park below. The lanes are steep, cobbled, and largely unchanged since the thirteenth century. At the top: the Jardin Exotique (€7) built around the ruins of a château, with cacti, succulents, and a view that takes in Cap Ferrat, Monaco, and on clear days the Italian coast as far as Bordighera. Sixty to seventy-five minutes here; not a minute wasted.
From Eze we descend to Monaco — the Principality, 2.02 square kilometres, ruled by the Grimaldi family since 1297. Port Hercule for the yachts: super-yachts moored stern-to, the scale of the boats against the buildings. The Casino de Monte-Carlo gardens and the Belle Époque façade — you can walk past without going in and still understand what this place is about. Then Le Rocher, the old town on the rock: the cathedral where Grace Kelly is buried, the palace changing of the guard at 11:55 if your timing allows, the view from the ramparts south over the sea. The return to Villefranche is approximately 20 minutes — the A8 east, straight back along the coast.

At quai de l'Amiral Courbet in Villefranche-sur-Mer — the tender landing pier, in the old village itself. We will be there with a name board before your tender docks. The full Nice–Eze–Monaco route typically runs 4.5 to 5.5 hours from Villefranche — Nice is only 6 kilometres, ten minutes each way. The shorter transit means more time at each stop. We can trim the itinerary further if your ship has an early departure. Eze is never cut short.
No. We drop you at the village gate and wait with the car. Eze is better without a guide. We tell you where to find Chèvre d'Or before you go in.
We wait. There is no extra charge for tender delays. We stay in WhatsApp contact throughout the day and adapt the itinerary accordingly if the shore window is reduced. Villefranche ships anchor in the bay; tender delays are standard and we have built this into our planning from the start.
Yes. Steep, cobbled, uneven lanes. Some sections have significant drops. Manageable for most people in reasonable health; not suitable for wheelchairs. Comfortable shoes strongly recommended.
Yes, and we often suggest it for guests who have already visited Nice. From Villefranche, skipping Nice saves twenty minutes of driving and gives a full extra hour in Eze. The day is better for it. Mention it when you enquire.
